The Rise of Butler’s Pantries

Often referred to as sculleries, working pantries, or functional pantries, butler’s pantries are making a major comeback. They provide extra storage, food preparation areas, and even hidden coffee bars. David Kallie, CEO of Dimension Inc., a design and remodeling firm, notes that concealed butler’s pantries will be especially trendy. “Customizable appliances that seamlessly blend with cabinetry have been popular for years, but the concept of a hidden butler’s pantry—tucked behind sliding walls or disguised as cabinetry—is gaining momentum,” says Kallie.

Slab Backsplashes Take the Spotlight

Traditional tile backsplashes are giving way to sleek, large-scale slab backsplashes. These seamless, single-slab designs add a luxurious touch and create a bold statement. Matching the slab to the countertops is a popular choice, but contrasting colors and striking patterns are also making waves. Materials like granite, marble, and quartz are leading the way.

According to Emily Ruff, owner of Cohesively Curated Interiors, “Many clients are requesting slab backsplashes that extend all the way to the ceiling, especially around windows and range hoods.” April Gandy, Principal Designer at Alluring Designs Chicago, adds, “Slab backsplashes offer a clean, seamless look and are easy to maintain, as they have no grout lines to clean.”

Natural and Organic Elements

The biophilic design trend is here to stay, and kitchens are no exception. In 2025, expect to see more natural materials like organic stone countertops, reclaimed wood cabinetry, and eco-friendly materials throughout kitchen spaces. Lead Designer at Rumor Designs, Sierra Fallon, predicts an increase in the use of colorful marbles and quartzites for countertops, backsplashes, and hood surrounds.

Cameron Johnson, CEO of Nickson Living, believes the “green” trend will extend to both large elements like natural wood cabinets and smaller details like wooden bowls and stainless steel trash bins. Incorporating these natural materials will add warmth, texture, and a sense of well-being to kitchen spaces.

Larger Islands Designed for Dining

The kitchen island is becoming more than just a workspace—it's evolving into a primary hub for dining and socializing. In 2025, expect to see larger kitchen islands designed to serve as dining tables and gathering spaces. Some homeowners are even opting for double islands to accommodate larger groups.

Hilary Matt, of Hilary Matt Interiors, explains, “Kitchens are becoming multi-functional spaces, and we’re seeing a shift toward larger islands to meet the needs of families and entertainers alike.” The traditional dining room may become less relevant as the kitchen becomes the true heart of the home.

Warmer Color Palettes

While white kitchens remain timeless, 2025 will see a shift toward warmer, more vibrant color palettes. Natural wood tones, earthy hues, and rich, saturated colors will replace the stark white and gray kitchens of previous years. Expect to see cabinets in warm wood tones, such as honey, walnut, and chestnut, alongside accents of deep greens, blues, and rich burgundies.
